Periodic Table (2006)
software improvisation environment
variable duration

Periodic Table is the third in a series of works which blur the distinctions between composition, improvisation, and instrument-building. Some features of the music are determined in advance of performance, through processes of software development and rehearsal. Other elements are determined in the moment by the software itself. The instrument's choices heighten the element of improvisational risk, and require the performer to redirect the flow of the music in the moment. In performance, Periodic Table becomes a duo - a dialogue between performer and instrument, and between the deliberately calculated and the momentary inspiration.
